Weather predicting pine cones

In dry weather, pine cones open up so gusts of wind can catch and carry the seeds inside. Then the seeds can ride the wind and hopefully get planted elsewhere do more trees can grow.

But wet weather will just wash the seeds away. So when it's rainy or humid, pine cones will close up to protect their seeds.

That’s why a pine cone can make a great weather station. Hang one outside near a window and check it to see if it's open or closed. A closed pine cone might tell you that it's humid or that rain is on its way!
